1. Visit the Nerja Caves (Cuevas de Nerja)

  • One of the most famous attractions in the area, the Nerja Caves are a must-see. These ancient caves feature incredible rock formations, massive stalactites and stalagmites, and even prehistoric cave paintings. There’s also an underground auditorium where concerts are occasionally held.

2. Enjoy the Balcón de Europa

  • The Balcón de Europa is a stunning viewpoint offering panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea and the cliffs of Nerja. It’s a popular spot for a leisurely stroll, watching the sunset, or enjoying a coffee at one of the nearby cafés. This iconic landmark is at the heart of the town and is perfect for photos.

3. Relax on the Beaches

  • Nerja boasts several beautiful beaches. Playa Burriana is the most popular, offering soft sand, clear waters, and a variety of beachside restaurants (chiringuitos). Playa Calahonda, nestled beneath the Balcón de Europa, is a smaller, picturesque beach surrounded by cliffs, while Playa de Maro is known for its secluded beauty and crystal-clear waters, ideal for snorkeling.

4. Explore the Historic Old Town

  • Nerja’s Old Town is full of narrow streets, whitewashed buildings, and vibrant flowers. It’s a great place to explore on foot, with plenty of shops, traditional tapas bars, and restaurants to enjoy. Wander through the plazas and soak up the traditional Andalusian atmosphere.

5. Hike in the Natural Parks

  • For nature lovers, the Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama Natural Park offers hiking trails with breathtaking views of the mountains and the sea. You can explore routes leading to waterfalls, rivers, and scenic viewpoints like El Cielo, a peak with stunning coastal views.

6. Take a Boat or Kayak Tour

  • Explore the coastline from the water by renting a kayak or taking a boat tour. You can paddle along the cliffs and discover hidden coves, caves, and waterfalls, especially around Playa de Maro. It’s an exciting way to experience the natural beauty of the area.

7. Visit the Aqueduct of El Águila

  • This 19th-century aqueduct is an impressive architectural marvel, located just outside Nerja. It was originally built to transport water to local sugar mills, and today it’s a stunning sight with its four tiers of arches spanning a deep gorge.

8. Explore the Río Chíllar Trail

  • The Río Chíllar hike is one of the most popular activities in Nerja. This refreshing hike takes you through the river, where you’ll wade through shallow water, pass by waterfalls, and walk through narrow canyons. It’s a great adventure, especially on hot days.

9. Day Trip to Frigiliana

  • Just a short drive from Nerja is the beautiful village of Frigiliana, often considered one of Spain’s most picturesque white villages. Wander through its cobbled streets, admire the colorful flower pots, and enjoy the views of the surrounding mountains and coastline. It’s a peaceful and scenic day trip.

10. Visit the Church of El Salvador

  • Located near the Balcón de Europa, the Church of El Salvador is a lovely 17th-century baroque-style church with a peaceful atmosphere. Its interior features beautiful religious artwork, and it’s a nice spot to visit while exploring the town.
